How Should Your Body Be Positioned in an Ergonomic Chair?
When sitting‚ choose a chair that supports your back․ Keep your feet flat on the floor and your knees at about a 90 degree angle; keep your shoulders relaxed and your head aligned over your shoulders․
The most common scenario is the person who buys an ergonomic chair and just sits down in it without adjusting it․ An ergonomic chair is not going to help if your body is not positioned correctly within the chair․ Familiarity with the principles of appropriate ergonomic seated posture can produce improved comfort and less strain‚ leading to an ideal working posture․
Your lumbar support should fully support your lower back․ Ensure your hips are far back in the chair rather than perching on the front edge․ This allows your lumbar support to maintain the curve of your spine while you are seated and prevents you from slouching as the day wears on․ Once the lower back is aligned properly‚ the rest of the spine can be aligned․
As a general rule‚ keep your feet flat on the floor․ If your feet do not comfortably touch the floor‚ you may need to adjust the chair height or use a footrest․ Flat-footed sitting tends to keep the weight of the body situated more evenly while sitting‚ with knees at or slightly below the level of the hips‚ which contributes to stability of the body․
The same posture should be maintained in the shoulders‚ which should be relaxed and not raised or rolled forward․ At the mouse and keyboard‚ the elbows should be relaxed‚ close to the body‚ and bent to approximately 90°․ Appropriately adjusted armrests can support the user’s arms and thus minimize excessive strain on the user’s shoulders‚ neck‚ and upper back․
Keeping a neutral position of the head and neck means the ears and shoulders are in the same plane when seen in profile‚ and reduces the strain on the neck muscles‚ otherwise they may become fatigued by holding the head in a forward position for a long period of time․
Nonetheless‚ it is also important to remember that no seated position is meant to be maintained all day‚ and the body benefits from movement even in an ergonomic seated position․ Small adjustments to posture‚ gentle stretches‚ and brief standing breaks have been shown to reduce stiffness and discomfort during long work periods․
The ergonomic features of the NextChair Luxe include LumbarFlo™ dual axis lumbar support‚ sliding seat‚ adjustable headrest‚ 3D armrests and a synchro tilt mechanism‚ so that the chair can be adjusted to fit the user’s body․ This makes it easier for the user to maintain good posture in work or sedentary activities for an extended period․
Final Thoughts
An ergonomically correct sitting position is one not forcing the body into any undesirable position and not overstraining the seated human․ Optimal sitting implies a position with backrest‚ feet resting on the ground‚ relaxed shoulders‚ and the head aligned with the body․ Good posture while sitting‚ together with movement and the use of an ergonomic chair adjusted to the individual’s body‚ can increase comfort and well-being․
