Why Should You Think About Seat Depth Before Buying an Ergonomic Chair?
Another important dimension when buying an ergonomic chair is seat depth‚ which influences the support provided to the legs and the pressure behind the knees․
The depth of the seat․
Most people first look at backrests‚ then move to armrests‚ and sometimes colour ‚ material‚ and price․ The seat itself is mostly decided in a few seconds of sitting․ Feels okay․ Move on․
But if you sit for hours every day‚ the depth of your seat matters․
A too-short seat can lead to parts of the thighs not being supported‚ and a sense of being positioned too far forward on the seat‚ removing stability from the lower body over long periods of time in a working position․
If the seat is too deep‚ the front of the seat may initially be against the back of the knees․ This may not be a problem․ This pressure can make your legs feel uncomfortable‚ restless‚ or poorly supported after several hours․
This is why adjustable seat depth is useful․
The NextChair Luxe 2․0 has a sliding seat pan which can be pulled out and pushed back as needed․ People with long legs can pull out the seat pan for more thigh support․ People with shorter legs can push the seat pan back so they can sit close to the backrest without the pressure behind their knees being painful․
It also helps your lower back․
If the seat depth allows‚ you should not have to sit forward in the seat; sitting back in the seat allows the lumbar support to make full contact․ If you have to slide forward from the back of the seat‚ to remove the pressure from behind your knees‚ you may no longer have full contact with the lower back․
It includes a feature (LumbarFlo™) for providing dual-axis lumbar support (up-down and front-back)․ However‚ without a good seat‚ lumbar support is of little value․ Ideally‚ the seat‚ backrest‚ armrests, and recline all work together to provide support that fits properly to the user’s shape․
Seat depth also matters‚ as you type‚ read‚ take phone calls‚ lean forward‚ lean back‚ and shift your body during an average day․ Sliding the seat pan gives your body more room to feel comfortable instead of jamming your legs․
The ergonomics of an office chair is not only about how soft it feels‚ it also has to fit your unique body shape for everyday working conditions․
It seems like a small detail‚ but seat depth makes a very real difference once you sit in a chair every day․
