Is sitting up straight all day actually the best posture?
No, because sitting up all day causes you to fatigue more as it means your lower back is working hard to force yourself in an upright position. Which is why an ergonomic chair like NextChair which comes with an adjustable lumbar support, is useful as it helps you to maintain the correct upright posture, even without having to force yourself into holding your body in an upright position throughout the day.
Although maintaining a completely upright position throughout the day may not be wise‚ the healthiest sitting position is the one that allows movement‚ is well-supported‚ and keeps the spine aligned․
A common reminder to “sit up straight” has led many people to think that staying in a rigorous position is the best way to maintain proper sitting posture․ While a rigidly straight posture is often an improvement over slouching‚ it is still not optimal to remain in a stationary position․ The human body is designed to move‚ and even good posture can be uncomfortable if held for a long period․
A common belief is that one sitting posture is the ideal․ Posture is actually dynamic‚ alternating‚ and continuously changing according to the environment․ Small movements‚ changing positions and periodic variation in movement are considered helpful to the body because the muscles used to maintain an upright sitting position become fatigued if there is no variation in posture․
Correct posture does not mean that the spine should be kept straight most of the time․ Natural spinal curvature is important for load carrying and shock absorption․ Good sitting posture provides support for the curves in your back‚ and allows you to sit as comfortably as possible․ Shoulders relaxed‚ feet flat on the floor‚ and your chair should support the curves in your spine so that it is relaxed not rigid․
Movement is another factor․ Research and ergonomic professionals generally agree‚ the best posture is usually the next posture․ In spite of good support‚ sitting can result in stiffness and discomfort․ Certain strategies can help relieve pain and fatigue caused by sitting‚ including stretching‚ taking breaks to stand up and walk‚ and making periodic changes of sitting position․
This is where ergonomic chairs can come into play․ Modern ergonomic chairs have evolved from solely providing comfort to promoting the natural movement of the body․ Depending on the model‚ features such as adjustable recline‚ lumbar support‚ adjustable seat depth‚ and adjustable armrests are available‚ allowing the user to adjust the chair so the body can assume supported working postures‚ rather than forcing the body into a single posture․
The NextChair Luxe was designed with this in mind․ The patented LumbarFlo™ dual axis lumbar support holds the natural curve of the lower back‚ while the synchro tilt mechanism allows for reclining without losing lower back support․ Together with the sliding seat‚ the adjustable headrest and the 3D armrests‚ these features mean that the chair stays comfortable when the position of an user is changed․
Final Thoughts
Good posture does not mean that you must sit up extremely straight all day․ Good posture is when your body is in its natural alignment and you can move around․ Using a properly supportive ergonomic chair in conjunction with healthy movement habits will help you stay comfortable‚ energized‚ and well-postured throughout your workday․
